Castles and palaces
We invite you to discover former royal and manorial residences, imposing buildings hosted by picturesque settings, where man and nature have beautifully co-operated.
You can start by visiting the most known ambassadors of this category, such as: Peles (photo) and Pelisor Castles in Sinaia, Bran Castle, Corvin (Hunyadi) Castle, Sturdza Castle from Miclauseni, Cantacuzino Castle, Mogosoaia Palace, Palace of Culture in Iasi, the Palace of Ruginoasa, and the list continues with multiple examples.
Fortresses and medieval cities
We have many medieval attractions that are already known in Europe, some of them being very well preserved and integrated into present times, while others take you to a trip into long-forgotten times. The land of medieval stories, Transylvania, is waiting for you!
One of the most representative and beautiful medieval fortress and city is Sighisoara (photo). Its surroundings unfold picturesque villages like Viscri, Saschiz or Biertan.
Other medieval cities, equally known, are Sibiu, Brasov, Cluj, Alba-Iulia, Targu-Mures etc.
We also invite you to visit the historical citadels that have won the battle with time and are still standing, some of them having been rehabilitated: Rasnov Citadel, Poenari Citadel, Neamt Citadel, Deva Citadel, Suceava Citadel, Oradea Citadel, Alba Carolina Citadel, Fagaras Citadel and Rupea. Apart from being historical benchmarks, these citadels also offer great panoramic views over their surroundings.
Unesco World Heritage
We take pride in our cultural and natural sites that are included in the Unesco World Heritage. These places carry a great significance for the identity of our country and are a must for your itinerary: unique churches with exterior frescoes in Bucovina (8), the first dacian citadels from Orastie mountains (5) – that attest the Dacian kingdom, the historical city center of Sighisoara, Hurezi Monastery from Horezu, the Saxon villages with fortified churches in Transylvania (7), the wooden churches in Maramures County (8), the largest and best preserved of Europe’s deltas – Danube Delta.
City Breaks
You will discover interesting places in our most important cities, each with a particularity of its own. We recommend that you take 2-3 days of your time to enjoy everything these cities have to offer:
Brasov (gateway to the mountains), Sibiu (European Capital of Culture 2007), Cluj Napoca (Sillicon Valley of Romania; an important academic center), Oradea (great austrian baroque architecture), Timisoara (European Capital of Culture 2021), Iasi (home of the second most beautiful theatre in the world – Vasile Alecsandri National Theatre – according to BBC 2015), Constanta (gateway to the sea).
Customs and traditions. Countryside life
One of Romania’s most important ace up the sleeve is keeping the traditions and customs from long-forgotten times: typical folk dances (calusul) and folk music (doina) etc. Life in the countryside is summed up to simplicity, to working the land, to taking care of the household. In the countryside, each season has its own picturesque story and you will be amazed by places and people.
You can find summaries of life and customs of traditional villages from different regions of our country in outdoor ethnographic museums. This type of museum waits for you in Bucharest (Dimitrie Gusti National Village Museum), in Sibiu (The Astra Museum of Traditional Folk Civilization) and in Cluj (The Romulus Vuia National Ethnographic Park).
Nature and wilderness
We are lucky to have unbelievable natural attractions that you absolutely must 🙂 visit and admire.
When entering the territory of our country, the Danube forms the most spectacular gorge of its entire course (the Big and Small Boilers – Cazanele Mari and Cazanele Mici).
The Carpathian Mountains (not very impressive through their heights – 2544 m max. alt – but with high quality sceneries and treasures: waterfalls, caves) open their trails to spectacular hikings for all difficulty degrees and the mountain highways Transfagarasan and Transalpina (together with the newer one, Transbucegi) will provide you great scenic drives.
Last but not least, the coast of the Black Sea, with its ca. 250 km of beaches, can be an interesting choice if you want to change the scenery.
Also, we (still) take pride in wisent reservations (Hateg-Slivut, National Park Vanatori-Neamt), in mountain regions where you can see black goats (Bucegi mountains, Piatra Craiului, Fagaras, Retezat, Parang etc), in old-growth (virgin) forests and unique ecosystems found in the Danube Delta.
History and architecture
Our long-standing certification in this land and the civilizations we have intersected with led to the development of a vast cultural and historical heritage throughout the entire country. Almost each region and place has an interesting historical legend and you’ll be taken in by the fusion of multiple architectural styles, from medieval, byzantine, gothic, classic to the modern one.
Bucharest
The cosmopolitan capital of our country invites you to discover its good or least good parts, to observe the historical buidlings along with the modern ones, to enjoy the peaceful oases (parks like Cismigiu, Herastrau, Tineretului, Carol etc) and recreational spots in or outside the city (Vacaresti Natural Parc – first urban park in Romania, Natural Park Comana), but also to adventure yourself into crowded markets and commercial areas. An amalgam of styles, places, feelings and people.
Roam the main boulevards of the city and discover stories for all tastes. From Calea Victoriei (Victory Way) to Bulevardul Regina Elisabeta (Queen Elisabeth Boulevard), from Piata Victoriei (Victory Square) to Arcul de Triumf (Triumph Arch), from Piata Universitatii (University Square or 21st of December) to Piata Unirii (Union Square) or Piata Romana (Roman Square), the city presents you with history and architecture (old and new).
